Our
Message To You...
Welcome to the Third Grade! As
your children begin this year they will face many changes and
challenges. Perhaps the
greatest of these will be the emphasis on personal responsibility and independent work
habits. Third grade provides the transition from a primary grade focus of many whole group,
teacher-directed activities to a middle-school focus for encouraging independent and/ or
small group activities and explorations.
During the school year there
will be many opportunities for academic growth. Learning in each academic discipline
provides students with challenges no matter which learning style they exhibit.
The language arts curriculum
includes components of reading, grammar, phonics, and many different types of writing.
Specific topics include phonetic decoding, story analysis, creative writing, poetry, as
well as exposure to many different types of literature. Third grade is the year when
mastery of cursive writing is expected.
Math is another subject, which
continues to build on the foundation of skills, which were mastered in first and second
grade. It is expected that addition and subtraction facts through 18 can be recalled
immediately. We continue to use manipulatives to facilitate better understanding of new
concepts. Memorization of basic facts is essential as multiplication and division are
introduced and developed throughout the year.
Our social studies and science
curricula provide many opportunities to integrate academic studies across the curriculum.
In science, our topics include simple machines, sound, animals, rocks and soil, plate
tectonics, and plants. In social studies, we learn about many North American Native tribes
as we study lifestyles, customs, and ceremonies for each group. We also study the same
topics for Mexico, which enhances our Spanish language program. Our final unit of study is
government in our land.
The third grade team looks
forward to guiding our students through a very exciting school year. There are many
opportunities for students to develop new interests as well as to achieve academic
success. We appreciate the strong partnership we are able to develop with the parents
since we strongly believe that a total team effort enhances the educational experience at
East Amwell School.
