Welcome to First Grade
A first
grader is a very special and unique person who comes to school in
September tentative and apprehensive, while leaving with a positive
feeling of self-worth and a readiness to tackle the next phase of
development. Establishing this process of growth is important.
Children must develop his or her own individuality and find their
place within the class. They must also learn to be responsible and
respect the rights of others.
The
teacher in the classroom environment can then set the fundamental
principles of reading and writing in motion. Listening to stories in
big and little shared books and learning letter sound correspondence
helps to create a readiness for literacy. The ability to read on
one's own, is the highlight of this first grade
experience.
During
this year the students are also taught to think mathematically. They
deal with new concepts in concrete terms, by working with
manipulative before dealing in abstractions. Concepts presented
include addition and subtraction, fractions, money, time, geometry,
patterning, measurement and graphing. Problem solving and basic facts
are emphasized.
Other
first grade experiences include the exploration of the world of
science through the study of plants and animals. Utilizing literature
selections and cooperative learning, students are encouraged to
develop an understanding of community. We examine our neighborhoods,
holidays and traditions as well as those that are ethnically or
geographically foreign. We take an especially detailed look at
Japan.
First
grade is truly a time of rapid growth. It is amazing to watch the
students flourish in their new stimulating, academic environment!
