Math

The goal of the 7th and 8th grade mathematics program is for every child to acquire the analytical skills and understanding necessary for living in the real world. The student shall develop an appreciation for mathematics that will foster a continued interest in the subject. The experience should build self confidence through stimulating problem-solving activities as we prepare the students to become self-reliant mathematical thinkers.

Provisions will be made for individual differences in ability to learn in rates of learning and in ways students learn best. Varied manipulative devices, computers, calculators, "Hands on Equations" and special projects will be used to make the math program more meaningful and interesting. Students will be actively involved in the learning process, as we understand that student interest is heightened and content becomes more relevant when a hands on approach is used.

All of our programs are designed to meet the rigid Core Content Standards, and all contain elements of Algebra. Currently, out 7th grade program consists of two courses; Mathematics and Pre-Algebra. and our 8th Grade program consists of Pre-Algebra and Algebra.

Our current curriculum has enabled us to provide a solid mathematical foundation to students of all ability levels, therefore preparing them for success at the High School level.

Seventh Grade

In the 7th grade we have spent some time studying the elements of culture and then we created a culture. We then spent time exploring the geography of Europe in preparation for our study of the history of Europe.

We began that study with the feudal and Renaissance periods. We have continued with European history during World I and World War II with a special unit on the Holocaust. After we finish European history, we will start a study of modern communist China and Japan which will finish out the rest of the school year.

Eighth Grade

In the eighth grade we have spent time studying the Constitution and the responsibilities of citizenship. We then studied the beginning of our country under the Constitution and the precedents that were set in this period. We are now studying the events leading to the Civil War. We will finish the year with the events of the Civil War and its lasting effects on our country.

Spanish

Seventh and Eighth Grade Spanish Course Description

Developmental Spanish is taught to seventh and eighth grade students every day. It is equivalent to one year of high school Spanish. Upon successful completion of this course students may elect to take Spanish 11 in high school.

Our program is based on the belief that the purpose of learning Spanish is to communicate with the people who speak it and to understand their cultures. Emphasis is placed on developing the four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Paso a Paso is a complete program, which spans over a two-year period. Students will continually engage in authentic communicative tasks. Activities are varied and challenging and address different learning styles.

Pair and group age-appropriate activities constitute the great majority of exercises. Videos that are hosted by teenagers throughout the Spanish speaking world, audio tapes, transparencies, and vocabulary art black line masters are all materials and components that enable us to meet our goal of communication and learning cultures.

Mrs. Malloy

Last month East Amwell Township School 7th and 8th grade students collected supplies to be sent over to Iraq for our troops.  The students collected 14 boxes of dry-goods and they were sent over-seas about 3 weeks ago.  Along with the supplies, student made cards and wrote notes expressing their thanks for the sacrifices that the troops were making for their country. Last week Mrs. Stoll, the teacher coordinator of the project, received a Certificate of Thanks from the Commander of Forward Operating Base Cropper acknowledging the East Amwell School students for their generosity to the troops.

Along with the Operation Iraqi Freedom Thank You Certificate, there was an American Flag that was flown over Base Cropper on February 5, 2009.  The flag was present by SGT John King, Alpha Battery 3/112th FA BN to the students of East Amwell School.
